Indu to bring Indian cuisine to George Street hotspot

Medical doctor, philanthropist and restaurateur Sam Prince was late to Sydney's Mexican restaurant party with his 2013 launch of Mejico​ restaurant on Pitt Street, but is ahead of the culinary curve with his latest CBD restaurant plans.

Prince's restaurant director, Richard Prout, confirmed the group has nabbed a site at 350 George Street, at the gateway to Angel Place, where China Lane resides and David Thompson is eyeing a site for the Sydney branch of Long Chim​.

"It's in the same building [ex Nomad chef Nathan Sasi's​] Mercado​ is going in. It'll open later this month, it's Indian," Prout confirmed.

Indu will fill a yawning gap in the Sydney food scene, with Prout arguing that Indian is one of the few cuisines in short supply at the northern end of the city.

Designer Matt Woods has crafted an interior that will include a curved rammed wall, while the food is inspired by the villages and coastal regions of India's south.

Indu will have its own satellite dosa kitchen, and while vegetarian dishes such as sesame smashed okra with cumin and burnt chilli salt will feature, the menu will also include meat dishes.

"There's a smoked brisket with chilli and bacon jam. The chef, Binal Kumar, said if he wanted to cook straight Indian, he would've stayed in India," Prout says.
