'Ramnut' rams together ramen noodles and doughnuts

Have we crossed the final Frankenfood frontier? A mash-up of a mash-up, sitting somewhere between a ramen burger and a cronut, this culinary creation could be the ultimate junk food hybrid.

An American college student and blogger has rammed together ramen and doughnuts to create a deep-fried hybrid delight. Josh Scherer of food blog Culinary BroDown affectionately christened his creation the "ramnut".

An evolution of the ramen burger, the "ramnut" takes the student diet staple into unexplored sweet territory. Basically it's a deep-fried ring of milky instant ramen noodles, decorated with traditional doughnut toppings.

At least Scherer set aside the ramen packet seasoning, and cooked the noodles in horchata, a traditional Latin American sweet, spiced and nutty milk drink, a little like liquid from a rice pudding.

The blanched noodles are bound with egg, arranged into a slab, part-frozen and cut into circles, filled with jam or custard, deep-fried to a crisp, and decorated with icing and sprinkles.

The blog post opens with a cheeky dig at cronut creator Dominique Ansel: "Get at me, Dominique Ansel" - but we doubt the ramnut will rival the New York pastry chef's cult croissant and doughnut hybrid, both in terms of queue-ability and cooking technique (Ansel's pastry takes three days to make).

So what do they taste like? Scherer's post simply states: "They're starchy, they're crispy, they're covered in frosting and stuffed with custard - that's about all I can tell you".

Given ramen noodles are neutral squiggles of dough, and in this interpretation they're cooked in sweetened milk, it could just about work.

Ramnuts are not Culinary BroDown's only deep-fried ramen creation. The blog is also responsible for "ramen poutine" - a cross-cultural mash-up of the Canadian favourite of French fries slathered in melted cheese and gravy, with Scherer swapping potato chips for blocks of deep-fried noodles, and adding miso paste to the gravy.

With ramen venturing into desserts, who knows what new sweet-savoury Frankenfood we'll be ramming into our mouths next?!
